You know the best thing about spring semester isn’t the homework or the tests, and it’s certainly not buying all those textbooks. Then what is it? The best part is spring break and Spring Break Servant Events!! Each year during Michigan State’s spring break, people involved at Martin Luther Chapel have an opportunity to go on Servant Event Trips. These trips are a great chance to form friendships and be a blessing to others by serving in various ways.
This March, students are traveling to Phoenix (working with Habitat for Humanity), El Paso (working with Ysleta Lutheran Mission), and Galveston (working with One Mission: Galveston). Please pray for our groups as they prepare for these servant events. To get a taste of what our groups did last year, see the links below!
In March of 2009, 52 participants were part of the four servant event groups: Phoenix, El Paso, Nicaragua, and New Orleans (alumni). To read the followup letters from each of the groups, click the Location title.
Phoenix
On the Phoenix trip, the students were hosted by Christ Church Lutheran in Phoenix, Arizona. They worked with Habitat for Humanity during the day, and at night, they continued to grow together as a group through devotions and other activities.
El Paso
On the El Paso trip, the students stayed in the dormitories at Ysleta Lutheran Mission. In El Paso they refurbished a flood-damaged home for a family connected to the ministry of Ysleta Lutheran Mission. In the evenings they had Bible Studies and devotionals with their group.
Nicaragua
On the Nicaragua trip, the students stayed in Leon, Nicaragua, the second largest city in Nicaragua. Their project was to build a mission station for a rural community outside of Leon. As they worked at the site they built relationships with the local members of the community, interacted with the elders, and organized vacation Bible school activities.
New Orleans
On the New Orleans trip, the students and alumni drove to Camp Restore on the east side of New Orleans. They assisted with remaining clean-up work from Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav. In the evenings they had Bible studies where they talked about the day's work and grew their faiths together. This is the first time Martin Luther Chapel sent a Servant Event group to the Gulf Coast, and this is the first time Martin Luther Chapel held an alumni-focused trip in many years.
The teams are thankful for all of the support and prayers they received for their trips. Their experiences were faith-growing and truly a blessing to all involved.
